Before You Decide To Go Custom

Is a custom wedding dress right for me?

Custom can be particularly worthwhile if you've been searching for a wedding dress but haven't been able to find everything you want in one gown.

You may want to combine features from several dresses, change a neckline or silhouette, use a particular fabric, create something non-traditional, or simply want your wedding dress to match your design and fit preferences. 

You don't need an elaborate or unusual design to choose custom, either. A beautifully simple gown can be just as personal.

Do I need to know exactly what I want?

No.

Some brides come to us with a very specific vision, while others simply have a collection of inspiration photographs and an idea of the elements they like.

You can show us complete gowns, individual details, Pinterest or Instagram saves, sketches, fabrics or even dresses you've tried previously.

We'll use these references to understand what you're drawn to and help bring the different ideas together into your custom gown.

What if I like different parts of different wedding dresses?

This is actually one of the most common reasons to consider custom.

Perhaps you love the bodice of one dress, the skirt of another, sleeves from somewhere else, and a completely different back.

Rather than trying to find one existing gown with every feature, custom lets us explore how those different elements could work together in one design.

The important part isn't simply combining features — it's making sure the proportions, fabrics, construction and details complement one another so the finished gown feels personally intentional.

I've already been to several bridal stores and can't find my dress. Can you help?

Yes. In fact, you may now have a much clearer understanding of what you want.

Trying on wedding dresses can help you discover which silhouettes you prefer, which necklines suit you, how much structure you want, and which details don't feel like you.

Bring that information with you.

Your Wedding Dress Design

Can you create a dress from Pinterest or Instagram inspiration?

Yes. Inspiration photographs are a useful starting point.

You can send us one gown you love or photographs showing different elements you'd like incorporated into your dress.

Your inspiration doesn't need to come from one particular designer or gown.

The aim is to understand the characteristics you're drawn to and develop those ideas into your own custom wedding dress.

Can you copy another designer's wedding dress exactly?

We can use other wedding dresses as design inspiration, but our custom service isn't meant to produce a replica of another designer's gown.

Instead, we'll look at the particular elements you love — perhaps the silhouette, neckline, sleeves, lace placement or overall aesthetic — and use those references when developing your own design.

This is also where custom becomes more interesting: you're not necessarily restricted to one reference dress.

Can I change parts of a design?

Yes.

Your gown is being created specifically for you, so different design elements can be discussed during the design stage. These design elements, such as the neckline, bodice construction, waistline, skirt shape, back, sleeves, train, fabrics, lace, embellishments, or other details, can be customised to your preference. 

Can you create minimalist wedding dresses?

Absolutely.

Custom doesn't have to mean elaborate.

A minimalist gown may focus instead on beautiful fabric, precise construction, flattering proportions, and subtle details such as draping, pleating, a structured bodice, an interesting neckline, or a statement silhouette.

Can you create black or coloured wedding dresses?

Yes.

Custom can be particularly useful when you're looking for a colour or style that isn't commonly available within traditional bridal collections.

We've previously created non-traditional gowns, including black wedding dresses.

Fabric and colour availability will depend on the individual design, so send us your inspiration, and we can explore what's possible.

Can my wedding dress have detachable elements?

Depending on the design, yes.

Detachable sleeves, straps, overskirts and other elements can sometimes be incorporated to give your gown more than one look throughout your wedding day.

These features need to be considered as part of the overall construction of the gown, so they're best discussed during the consultation and design stage rather than added afterwards.

How much does a custom wedding dress cost?

There isn't one price for every custom gown because every design is different.

The cost can be affected by your choice of fabric, lace and embellishments, internal construction, silhouette, layering, sleeves, train and the overall complexity of the design.

Does custom mean more expensive?

Not necessarily.

“Custom” describes how your gown is being created rather than automatically placing it within one particular price bracket.

A minimalist crepe gown and a heavily structured lace gown with extensive beading, for example, involve very different materials and production requirements.

Your quotation is therefore based on your particular design.

What should I send when requesting a quote?

The more useful information you provide, the better we can understand what you're considering.

We recommend including:

• your wedding date
• inspiration photographs
• the elements you particularly like
• any changes you'd like made
• your preferred fabrics, lace or embellishments if known
• your approximate dress budget

You don't need to have every detail decided before contacting us.

Timeline & Ordering

How far in advance should I order my custom wedding dress?

We generally recommend beginning your custom wedding dress journey around 6–8 months before your wedding.

This allows time for your design to be confirmed, materials to be sourced, your gown to be produced and completed, and sufficient time to remain for fitting and any required alterations.

My wedding is less than six months away. Is it too late?

Not necessarily.

Whether we can accommodate a shorter timeframe will depend on your wedding date, the gown you'd like to create, material availability and our current production schedule.

Send us your wedding date and inspiration, and we can assess whether your design can realistically be completed within the available timeframe.

Can I start more than eight months before my wedding?

Yes. Starting your research earlier gives you more time to understand your options without rushing your decision.

If your wedding is still some time away, you can begin gathering inspiration and discussing your ideas before you're ready to confirm the gown.

The Custom Process

How does the custom wedding dress process work?

The process begins by sending us your inspiration, ideas and wedding details.

We'll review your design and provide a personalised quotation.

If you'd like to proceed, we'll book you in for a consultation appointment at our Subiaco bridal studio to discuss your design in more detail, take measurements and work through your fabrics and design details.

Once everything has been confirmed, your gown moves into production and we will send you progress photos at the necessary stages.

Do I need an appointment before getting a quote?

We recommend sending your inspiration and wedding details first.

This allows us to review your proposed gown and provide a personalised quotation before you decide whether you'd like to move forward with an in-studio consultation.

Where are consultations held?

Custom bridal consultations for Perth brides are held at our bridal studio in Subiaco, Perth.

Once we've reviewed your ideas and you've decided you'd like to proceed following your quotation, we'll arrange your consultation.

Measurements, Fit & Alterations

Is my custom wedding dress made to my measurements?

Your measurements are taken as part of the custom ordering process and are used when your gown is created.

Will I need alterations?

Possibly.

Once your completed gown arrives, you'll try it on so the fit can be assessed.

Made-to-measure does not mean alterations are not necessary. 

If alterations are required, these can then be arranged with our bridal alterations partner.

Alterations are a normal part of achieving the final fit of a wedding gown and shouldn't automatically be interpreted as something having gone wrong with the custom measurements or construction.

Are alterations included in the price of my custom wedding dress?

Alterations are separate from the cost of your custom gown.

Once your completed dress has been fitted, any required alterations can be arranged with our bridal alterations partner and quoted according to the work required.

Fabrics, Lace & Details

Can I choose my wedding dress fabric?

Yes. Fabric is an important part of both the appearance and behaviour of a wedding dress.

Depending on your design, we can explore options such as satin, crepe, tulle, lace, chiffon, organza and other suitable bridal fabrics.

Can I choose my lace and embellishments?

Depending on your design and material availability, we'll explore suitable lace, appliqués, beading or embellishment options during the design process.

These details can dramatically change the overall look of a gown, so we'll consider how they work with your silhouette, fabric and other design elements.

Your Completed Wedding Dress

When will I see my finished wedding dress?

Once your gown has been completed and arrives at our Subiaco bridal studio, we will arrange an appointment in store to try it on.

This is when you'll see the completed design in person, and we'll assess the fit and determine whether any final alterations are required.

What happens if my dress needs adjusting?

Any required alterations are identified once the completed gown is tried on.

Where alterations are required, these can be arranged with our bridal alterations partner so the final fit can be refined before your wedding.
