When she couldn't find a local designer to bring her vision to life, she discovered Envious Bridal in Perth.

Despite living interstate and being unable to visit our boutique, Grace decided to explore having her wedding dress custom-made from a distance.

From Canberra to Perth: Grace's Custom Wedding Dress Journey

Grace began her search close to home, visiting bridal stores in Canberra to explore different styles and silhouettes.

At the time, COVID-related travel restrictions made travelling to Sydney or other states difficult, limiting her options for working with a bridal designer.

Although she found gowns she liked, she couldn't find one that combined all her preferred details.

Rather than compromise, Grace began searching for an Australian bridal business that could help create a wedding dress around her individual preferences.

That's when she found Envious Bridal.

Ordering a custom wedding dress interstate was a new experience for Grace. Without the opportunity to visit our Perth boutique in person, she initially felt uncertain about the process.

However, she already had a clear vision and reference photographs from dresses she had tried on, giving us a starting point for discussing her design.

The Inspiration: Making the Design Her Own

Grace's inspiration came from a lace wedding dress she had previously tried on at a local bridal store.

She loved the gown's overall silhouette and intricate lace, but there were several details she wanted to change.

Instead of settling for an almost right dress, Grace chose to personalise the design around what suited her best.

One of her main changes was to the back. She preferred a rounded keyhole-style opening rather than the original low V-shaped back.

She also wanted to introduce a warmer tone beneath the ivory lace, replacing the original mocha-coloured lining with gold satin.

These changes may sound subtle, but they made a meaningful difference to the overall appearance of the gown.

The result was a design inspired by the elements Grace loved, refined to reflect her personal style and preferences.

The Custom Wedding Dress Design

Grace wanted a fitted lace wedding dress that felt timeless but still had distinctive details.

Her chosen design featured:

• A bateau neckline
• A sleeveless bodice
• Low V-shaped openings beneath the arms
• A rounded keyhole back with closure
• Ivory patterned lace over gold satin lining 
• Stretch lace for comfort and movement 
• A fitted mermaid silhouette
• A scalloped lace hem
• A sweeping chapel-length train 

Together, these elements created a gown that combined the intricate detail of lace with the warmth of a gold-toned underlay.

Refining the Back Design

Before production, Grace requested a digital design sketch so she could see how her preferred details would work together.

Our design team prepared an illustration showing the proposed gown, including the back design.

Grace initially considered a low V-shaped back but ultimately preferred the rounded keyhole opening.

Having the design illustrated gave her an opportunity to review the details and confirm her preferred direction before production began.

Choosing the Lace and Gold Lining

The lace was one of the most important elements of Grace's wedding dress.

She was particularly drawn to the intricate all-over pattern of the original gown and wanted to achieve a similar visual effect in her custom design.

Finding a suitable fabric was therefore an important part of the process.

While exact fabric matches are not always possible, particularly when designs use exclusive or proprietary textiles, we were able to source lace that closely resembled the pattern Grace loved.

Grace also selected a gold satin lining beneath the ivory lace.

The warmer underlay introduced a subtle contrast that helped define the lace pattern while giving the dress a softer, warmer appearance.

The combination of patterned lace, gold lining and a fitted silhouette became a defining feature of her custom gown.

From Design Approval to the Finished Gown

Once Grace had confirmed her design and fabric choices, her wedding dress moved into production.

Unlike some custom gowns that require detailed lace placement or extensive hand-applied embellishments, Grace's design used an all-over lace fabric.

This allowed the dressmakers to proceed with pattern cutting and construction without a separate mock-up stage.

The gown was carefully made to the agreed design, bringing together its fitted silhouette, distinctive back opening, scalloped hem and sweeping train.

Reviewing the Finished Production Photographs

After production was completed, the gown was photographed from different angles.

These images allowed Grace to review the finished dress, including the overall silhouette, lace pattern, neckline, back design and train, before it was sent to Perth.

For a bride ordering from interstate, this was an important stage in the process.

Although Grace couldn't visit our boutique during production, the photographs gave her an opportunity to see how her custom design had come together.

Once she had reviewed and approved the finished gown, it was sent to our Perth boutique in preparation for the next stage.

Grace's Wedding Day

Grace and her husband celebrated their wedding at home, surrounded by personal touches they had thoughtfully planned together.

Their backyard wedding reflected their personalities, from the furniture they collected over several months to the dried flowers displayed in VB bottles.

They even had a close friend complete a celebrant course so he could officiate their wedding.

Every detail carried a personal meaning, and Grace wanted her wedding dress to feel just as individual.

Her custom lace gown complemented the relaxed, heartfelt atmosphere of the celebration while still giving her the special bridal look she had imagined.

Just as importantly, Grace wanted a dress she could feel comfortable wearing throughout the day — including on the dance floor.

"I received so many compliments on my wedding day about my dress and felt beautiful. It met all my criteria, including – very importantly – being able to dance in it!"- Grace Hogan

"I’d heard about how expensive wedding dresses could be and was a bit nervous when I first looked at getting a custom gown. But the price was actually very similar to what I would have paid for something off the rack. The dress had exactly the wow-factor I wanted and it really felt like “my dress”. After trying on several dresses in stores, I felt like I had a good idea of what I liked but I couldn’t get it all in the one dress. Choosing to get a custom design meant I could have it all."

After trying on different gowns and struggling to find every detail she wanted in a single dress, she appreciated being able to combine her favourite features into one personalised design.

She also shared that the finished gown gave her the impact she had hoped for, while still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy her wedding day.

"I have always loved going to weddings and experiencing all of the personal touches that people include. It’s a celebration of love, and you feel all the special things that make them unique as a couple. We had a backyard wedding on our property and my husband and I designed the whole thing. We collected couches, chairs and tables together for months; we dried flowers and put them in VB bottles, built our own arbor, and our best friend completed a six-month celebrant course so he could marry us.
