Hailey Bieber's Wedding Dress: The Off-White Gown by Virgil Abloh

Hailey Bieber's wedding dress became one of the most recognisable celebrity bridal looks of 2019.

For her wedding to Justin Bieber in South Carolina, Hailey wore a custom lace wedding gown designed by the late Virgil Abloh for Off-White—a design that brought together traditional bridal elements with details more closely associated with Abloh's distinctive fashion and streetwear aesthetic.

Who Designed Hailey Bieber's Wedding Dress?

Hailey Bieber's wedding dress was designed by Virgil Abloh for Off-White.

That choice was significant because Abloh wasn't known primarily as a bridal designer.

Hailey told Vogue that she had wanted Virgil to design the dress from the beginning. Rather than choosing a traditional wedding-dress designer, she wanted someone whose fashion aesthetic already connected with her personal style. 

That decision ultimately shaped one of the most interesting aspects of the gown.

At first glance, many of its elements are recognisably bridal: lace, long sleeves, a fitted silhouette, train and cathedral-scale veil.

Look more closely, however, and distinctly Off-White details appear throughout the design.

The gown was built around a fitted, off-the-shoulder silhouette.

Off-the-Shoulder Neckline

The neckline sits across the shoulders before transitioning into fitted lace sleeves.

This creates a relatively open neckline while maintaining the coverage and detail of a long-sleeved wedding dress.

Rather than treating the sleeves as a separate feature, the lace continues across the bodice and down the arms, giving the upper half of the gown a more continuous appearance.

Long Lace Sleeves

The fitted lace sleeves extend beyond the wrist and partially over the hands.

This exaggerated length is a small detail, but it changes the proportions of the gown and gives an otherwise traditional bridal feature a more contemporary treatment.

Fitted Mermaid Silhouette

The gown follows the body closely through the bodice, waist and hips before widening toward the hem and train.

That fitted silhouette provides an important contrast with the scale of the veil.

Rather than combining an enormous veil with an equally voluminous ball gown, the narrower dress allows the veil and train to provide much of the drama.

Low Back

From behind, the gown features a plunging back with a sheer support panel.

This keeps the back relatively open without interrupting the fitted structure of the gown.

Lace and Embroidery

The detailing wasn't simply conventional floral bridal lace.

According to Off-White women's head designer Sabrina Mandelli, classical floral embroidery was combined with symbols associated with Off-White, including the brand's arrow motif.

That combination is central to understanding the design.

Instead of abandoning traditional bridal details, Abloh modified them with elements belonging to his own design language.

The “Till Death Do Us Part” Veil

If there is one element most closely associated with Hailey Bieber's wedding look, it's probably the veil.

The cathedral-length veil extended well beyond the gown and carried the words: “TILL DEATH DO US PART”

along its hem in Abloh's characteristic graphic style. 

The scale alone would have made the veil a major part of the bridal look.

And from a design perspective, this is one of the most interesting ideas within the entire outfit.

How Hailey Bieber's Custom Wedding Dress Was Made

The gown wasn't simply an existing Off-White dress converted into bridal white.

It was developed specifically for Hailey.

Vogue documented that the design process began approximately a year before the wedding, with Abloh and Off-White women's head designer Sabrina Mandelli overseeing its development.

The production involved considerable work: 10 people worked on the dress, another 10 worked on the veil, and Hailey had three fittings before the wedding.

That provides an interesting insight into bespoke bridal design.
