Real Bride Lisa's Custom Black Wedding Dress: Breaking Bridal Traditions
Share
As brides embrace individuality more than ever, the black wedding dress has risen as a striking symbol of personal style. It’s a choice that breaks tradition with intention — elegant, daring, and undeniably captivating. More brides are discovering the magnetic allure of a black gown and choosing it to define their most meaningful moment.
How It Started
From the moment Lisa got engaged, she knew she wanted a wedding dress that was anything but traditional. She had her heart set on a black wedding gown—bold, distinctive and a true reflection of her personality.
But finding it proved challenging.
Like many brides drawn to non-traditional styles, Lisa discovered that most bridal boutiques in Perth focused primarily on classic white gowns. While she tried on several beautiful dresses, including styles that flattered her figure, none felt like her. They were elegant, but they didn’t capture the vision she had for her wedding day.
Determined to find something different, Lisa began looking beyond traditional bridal boutiques. That’s when she discovered Envious Bridal & Formal.
As she explored our website, she was excited to see that we specialise in custom-made wedding dresses and create unique designs for brides who want something beyond the ordinary—including coloured and black wedding gowns.
For the first time, Lisa felt that her vision wasn’t too unconventional. It was something that could actually be brought to life.
Intrigued by the possibilities, Lisa contacted us and submitted a price request for her dream gown. She was thrilled to discover that she could work towards creating a wedding dress that reflected her style, her personality and her vision, rather than settling for something simply because it was available.
And that is exactly what custom bridal design is about: creating a dress that feels uniquely yours.
The Inspiration
Black wedding dresses are becoming an increasingly popular choice for modern brides who want to break away from tradition and make a statement. Bold, sophisticated and undeniably striking, a black gown offers a powerful way to express individuality and personal style.
For inspiration, Lisa shared screenshots of Christine Quinn’s iconic black wedding gown, which she had discovered through a blog post on our website. Christine’s original gown was a bespoke couture creation by renowned designer Galia Lahav, combining dramatic glamour with high-fashion elegance.
Lisa fell in love with the design and wanted to recreate the same overall look, with one small but personal modification—a tie-up sleeve detail.
The result was a bold bridal vision that proved a black wedding dress can be every bit as elegant, sophisticated and unforgettable as a traditional white gown—while making a statement that is uniquely your own.

The Fabric
Lisa’s gown was designed to balance drama, elegance and a sleek silhouette. The skirt featured eight layers of black tulle, including a layer of shimmering glitter tulle that created a subtle sparkle as she moved. The semi-sheer corset bodice was finished with delicate floral lace appliqués for a romantic couture-inspired look.
Lisa was presented with several lace options, including dimensional 3D floral lace with black beading and more understated embroidered black lace flowers.
Although she loved the texture of the 3D lace, Lisa felt its added dimension could create too much volume through the bodice. She wanted something more refined and streamlined.
She then chose the embroidered floral lace appliqué, giving the gown an elegant, sophisticated finish while allowing the sleek silhouette to remain the focus.

Mock up
Every custom gown begins with a mock-up of the dress silhouette, allowing the bride to see and refine the overall design before the final gown is created.
This sample showcases key design elements such as the neckline, bodice shape, waistline and train, ensuring every detail aligns with the bride's vision. Once approved, it becomes the blueprint for the finished gown, guiding the construction, fabric selection, and placement of lace appliqués, beading and other custom details.

Every custom gown begins with a personal consultation, where we work closely with each bride to refine every detail and bring her vision to life. From there, we carefully source premium fabrics, lace and embellishments to perfectly suit the design.
Our dressmakers then create detailed mock-ups, refining the gown at every stage to ensure every element is beautifully executed. Throughout the process, we keep our brides—including Lisa—updated with progress photos, allowing them to watch their dream dress come to life, step by step. It's a truly personal experience that makes the journey just as special as the finished gown.

Bride's Fittings
The final fitting is one of the most important stages of the custom dressmaking journey. While Lisa's gown was expertly crafted to her unique measurements, small refinements are a natural part of achieving the perfect fit.
