Real Bride: Sharna's Custom Black & White Wedding Dress

For Sharna, her dream wedding dress was never going to be traditional. She envisioned a striking black and white gown that celebrated her individuality, and we were honoured to transform that vision into a one-of-a-kind custom creation.

How It Started

Sharna came to us with a vision she had held onto for years—a black lace and white wedding dress that truly reflected her personality.

“My dream has always been to have a black lace/ivory wedding dress. My colour has always been black, and I would love to have a dress on my wedding day that represents me.”

Knowing that traditional bridal boutiques mainly stock white wedding gowns, Sharna didn't spend countless hours searching for something she knew would be difficult to find. Instead, she collected inspiration images and turned to custom-made as the best way to bring her vision to life.

During her design consultation, we explored the details of her dream gown, discussing the styles, fabrics and features that mattered most to her. Once the design was finalised, we took her measurements and officially began the exciting journey of creating her one-of-a-kind black and white wedding dress.

The Inspiration

Sharna found a white wedding dress featuring striking black lace detailing that instantly captured her attention. It perfectly reflected the style she had been searching for and became the inspiration for her custom wedding gown.

While she loved the overall design, Sharna also had a clear vision for the personalised touches that would transform it into a dress that was uniquely her own.

“I like gown-style dresses that flow nicely but are not too puffy. I am after a V-neckline, long-sleeved dress, with a lace top and flowy bottom. I would love for the dress to have the lace pattern following all the way down the dress. I am open to the lace being any pattern if it can be black.”

Working closely with our team, Sharna personalised the original design with carefully considered details that reflected her vision, creating a bespoke wedding gown that was as unique as she is.

Design Details

1. Long Illusion Sleeves with Black Lace Appliqués 

To complement the black and white theme, Sharna chose elegant long illusion sleeves adorned with black lace appliqués. The delicate sleeves added a romantic touch while beautifully framing the gown.

2. Plunging V-Neckline

Rather than the original sweetheart neckline, Sharna opted for a plunging V-neckline to create a more contemporary and striking look. 

3. Seamless Waistline

Sharna chose to remove the waistband, creating a clean, uninterrupted silhouette that allowed the eye to flow naturally through the gown.

4. No Train

Instead of a traditional train, Sharna selected a floor-length hem for greater comfort and freedom of movement. 

5. Corset Back

To achieve the perfect fit, Sharna chose a corset back in place of a zip closure. Not only did it add a romantic detail to the design, but it also allowed the gown to be adjusted for a beautifully sculpted fit.

The Fabric

We presented Sharna with a selection of lace appliqués and lace trims to complement the design of her custom wedding dress. After reviewing the options, she carefully selected the lace elements that best reflected her vision.

Lace Trim

Sharna fell in love with a lace trim originally designed for a traditional white wedding gown. To bring her black and white concept to life, we custom dyed the white lace black, creating a beautifully coordinated detail that perfectly complemented the overall design of her gown.

In Production Photos

With Sharna's design and fabric selections finalised, production of her custom wedding dress could begin.

Every gown starts with a detailed review of the design, fabrics and lace placement to ensure every element has been carefully considered before construction begins.

The first stage of production is creating a mock-up of the gown. This allows us to assess the silhouette, proportions and overall fit before cutting into the final fabrics, ensuring the design reflects the bride's vision and providing the opportunity to make any refinements before the dress is handcrafted.

Our dressmakers then carefully arranged the lace appliqués across the bodice, thoughtfully positioning each piece to create a balanced and seamless design. Before the appliqués were permanently sewn onto the gown, we sent Sharna progress photos for her to review and approve the placement, ensuring the placement reflected her vision before production continued.

At this stage, Sharna was invited to review the lace placement and provide her final approval before the appliqués were permanently sewn onto the gown. Involving our brides throughout the production process ensures every custom wedding dress is thoughtfully refined and truly reflects their vision.

This collaborative approach allows us to perfect the finer details, resulting in a one-of-a-kind wedding dress that is uniquely tailored to each bride's style and personality.

After months of planning, craftsmanship and collaboration, Sharna's custom black and white wedding dress was finally complete.

Throughout the production process, we kept Sharna involved by sharing progress photos for her review and approval. Once the gown was finished, we sent her the final production photos—and she was absolutely thrilled with the result.

Now, all that was left was her first fitting, where she would finally see her dream wedding dress come to life for the very first time.
